The Board of Governors of St Mary's C of E Primary School
The Board of Governors of St Mary's C of E Primary School consists of staff governors (including the head teacher), parent governors, foundation governors (representing St Mary's Church), co-opted governors and local authority governors. We sit as a full board of governors 5 times per school year and also work as 2 committees: Resources Committee (deals with finance, premises, personal etc) and Education Committee (considering curriculum, ethos, teaching and learning, pupil outcomes and well being etc). The committees also meet 5 times per school year.
Colin Speers
It was a pleasure to join the governing body in 2018, initially as a co-opted governor and later as a foundation governor. I was a parent at the school at the time.
I believe in volunteering to support the local community. I bring my experience as a GP partner running a small business providing services to the NHS as well as many years of executive board experience within the Wakefield district. I have a passion for continuous quality improvement and staff development.

Jill Fletcher
I joined the governing body in July 2022 as I wanted to challenge and develop myself in a new role outside my professional environment (as an actuarial consultant working with occupational pension schemes) in a way that was also of value to others.
I enjoy being able to bring my skillset in analysing information, thinking logically and finding solutions to support the school and make a positive contribution to school life.
I am a co-opted governor and I sit on the Resources Sub-Committee. I am also a parent of two pupils of the school, one past and one present.

Julie Brearey
I joined the governing body in 2022 as a co-opted governor.
In my working life I have seen how a strong primary education can benefit an individual throughout their life. I recognise the challenges that schools face in achieving national targets whilst supporting the needs of individual children and operating within their budget, and I believe that my professional experience in education and in business enables me to support our school in meeting these challenges.

Tracey Looker
I joined the Governor body in 2022 after my own children had left the school as I wanted to contribute to the continued success of the school that had given us as a family such a positive experience. Having recently worked in a school I have seen the difficulties of developing a school in line with a long term strategy whilst managing the day to day challenges. I am passionate about ensuring that the school leadership team feels supported and challenged to enable them to deliver the best education possible to the children in our community. I am a qualified Chartered Accountant so hope to be able to support the resources committee and senior leadership team in making the best use of limited resources.

Graham Davey
I became a parent governor in 2024 after my son joined the school, I’m passionate about the formative role Primary Schools can play in the wholistic development of children and want to help influence that with skills gained in a non-education setting but that could assist this.
My professional life, whilst not in education, has always aligned closely with it. I previously worked in professional rugby, firstly as a community officer working in schools and then with young professional players culminating in working with the national squads and in particular the wheelchair team who were successful in their quest to secure the World Cup in 2008.
More recently I have qualified as an architect and have worked with a number of schools and community groups to help develop projects. Whilst studying, I became involved in the RIBA Education department co-authoring some learning resources for primary schools using architecture as a driver for learning.
Around my architecture work, I have also worked as a Project Manager on unusual and challenging schemes such as the stage and scenic installation for Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.
I currently work as an Architect within the Court of protection setting developing bespoke properties for individuals that have undergone traumatic events.

Previous Governors
James Kitson
I have experience of being a director on a variety of company boards providing strategic support and governance. I see this as being a very similar role to that of a governor working with the governing board to help provide the same support to the school. In particular, I am able to look at longer term implications of various activities (externally or internally driven) and help to understand how best to assess the opportunities and implications to provide recommendations, in particular around finance, risk and strategy. I also have a good understanding and practical implementation of various governance models of commercial organisations.

Jamie Thompson
I’m passionate about providing high quality education to all, and the role of governor supports this belief. I also enjoy playing an active role in the local community. In 2016 I took time out to complete a Masters in Organizational Behaviour with a focus on developing teams, managing change, and using psychology to drive organizational performance. I stayed on as Leader in Residence at Leeds Business School and maintain an academic interest in teams and the facilitation of groups. I’m also a CIMA qualified chartered accountant.
